Melody Van Overbeek comes from a family of artists. The earliest conversations she remembers were about beautiful paintings and techniques. She has fond memories of her father painting landscapes in oils, and of him helping her as a child, with her coloring book efforts. He would show her how to mix the colors and shade areas to make the picture look more like a painting. Over the years, in her spare time, Melody has poured over art books in libraries, art supply stores, and book stores. Moreover, very early on, she began taking photographs so that they could be used as references for her paintings. She also made many sketches of famous Renaissance drawings from artists such as: Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, as well as sketching her husband, children, and animals to learn to draw well. In the 1970's and 80's Melody's passion developed for painting with acrylics. She painted pictures of her children, southwest scenes, florals, and landscapes. During these years, she also painted a copy of a Renaissance picture of Saint Cecilia by Guido Reni shown at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. She made a study of the famous David painting of Napoleon on his white stallion in the late 1980's, and took lessons from western watercolor artist, Kolan Peterson, as well as studying oriental art. In the 1990's, she became interested in Bob Ross books, and videos, and Sherry C. Nelson's birds in oils. In addition to visiting many galleries, and art shows in Palm Springs, and other areas of California, she has made many trips to scenic areas in California and Arizona to ignite new ideas. The beautifully rendered Indian paintings of Mr. R.C. Gorman especially influenced her latest paintings. She was equally taken with the idealistic realism of Thomas Kincaid, and developed more techniques for her paintings. Her paintings clearly show a great love and appreciation for the desert, and life in general. As you can see, Melody has been inspired by old and new art, while developing her own style. Family and friends have some of her paintings, but now, she would like to make her work available to others, so that they can enjoy her work, too. Melody paints and resides in Sun City, California.
